Custom Processing Services
Written by Robert Hoshowsky

Highly skilled specialists using state-of-the-art machinery, the team at Custom Processing Services offers a unique range of quality services, providing many contract manufacturing/toll processing services to a wide variety of industry sectors.

Headquartered in the City of Reading, Pennsylvania, Custom Processing Services has the expertise to handle requests including micronizing and nano-sizing, pulverizing, compounding, extruding, blending, crushing, screening, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) processing, and a great deal more.

A leading manufacturer and supplier, Custom Processing’s award-winning work, dedication, and steadfast commitment to customer services puts the company far ahead of the competition. Founded in 1998, the company has grown steadily under the leadership of the owner, President and Chief Executive Officer Gregory J. Shemanski.

Heading the business since its inception, Shemanski’s vast experience in the air milling micronizing industry includes everything from design and fabrication of pulverizing and air milling systems to management, sales, and administration at several of the larger processors in America, where he increased sales and profits.

At Custom Processing Services, he has played an instrumental role in developing and building the company and the design of the facility, using his considerable knowledge of plant assembly and installation, operations, and administration of “knowledge of air/jet/fluid energy milling systems to develop processes that are used to perform ultra-fine micronizing of powders,” the company says.

Strong and dedicated leadership
Shemanski’s executive team includes committed members with decades of related industry experience. These include Vice President Jeffrey A. Klinger, Plant Superintendent Scott C. Lehr, Managing Engineer Christopher J. Fell, and KT (Katharine) Brickman, the company’s Technical Sales Engineer. Together, they bring a wealth of education that includes industrial arts, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) in Thermal/Fluid Science, Engineering Management, Food Processors Institute/National Food Processors Association (FPI/NFPA) Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP Level I) training, supervisory training under the Manufacturers Association of Berks County (MABC) program, and Material Science and Engineering from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA.

Hired by Custom Processing Services after graduating college, Ms. Brickman is part of the company’s management team that won at the Governor’s Impact Awards (Small Business Impact Award) category in 2013. A year later, she was an Award Honoree at STEP, an initiative launched by the Manufacturing Institute supporting women in science, technology, engineering, and production.

As the company’s Technical Sales Engineer, she is responsible for technical grade testing and development, and works closely with clients defining conditions for processing, and product specifications for manufacturing.

Committed to quality
Specializing in micronizing, pulverizing, extruding, compounding, transportation, and Current Good Manufacturing Processing (cGMP), Custom Processing Services’ dedication to quality is second to none. Holding certifications for its Quality Management System in compliance with ISO 9001:2008, The Food Safety Management System (for food safety systems including ISO 22000:2005, ISO22002-1:2009 and additional FSSC 22000 requirements), and The ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), the company remains steadfast in its commitment to quality systems.

Endeavoring to not only meet but exceed client requirements, Custom Processing meets exact requirements as regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “to ensure that the products produced meet specific requirements for identity, strength, quality, and purity,” the company says, adding that “Put another way, Good Manufacturing Practices are standard guidelines set by the FDA to ensure all parts of drug development are carried out in safe and quality processes, to avoid contamination and ensure repeatability.”

This is yet another hallmark of Custom Processing’s dedication to professionally operating within regulatory frameworks for the betterment of its customers.

Operating under the internationally recognized HACCP quality management system for reducing safety risks in food, Custom Processing adheres to the seven principles governing HACCP. These principles include the need to conduct a hazard analysis, identify critical control points, establish corrective actions, and others.

Backed by quality systems, Custom Processing’s Analytical Laboratory Services sees the company conducting a range of tests for its clients. These include particle Size Analysis (Laser Diffraction) measured by Microtrac S3500 – the first particle size analyzer using three red laser diodes to characterize particles with great accuracy – and the Horiba LA 950, an advanced particle sizing instrument.

Performing other services including sieve analysis and moisture determination, the company’s Analytical Lab also provides High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), LECO Carbon Analysis used on metallic samples to determine concentration of elements, Hegman Scale (used to measure particle size), and other instruments such as the NPIRI Scale, measuring the fineness of grinds according to the National Printing Inks Research Institute.

Awards and facilities
Continually innovating and receiving praise from long-time and new customers, Custom Processing has received many awards for its outstanding work over the years, including the Facility Excellence Award (Pharmaceutical Processing 2014), and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Innovation Award by The Ben Franklin Technology Partners (BFTP) of Northeastern Pennsylvania in 2016, to name just a few.

To keep up with customer demands and provide ongoing superior service, Custom Processing has multiple facilities. Along with its corporate headquarters, the Reading campus has three manufacturing centers: Plants One, Two, and Three. Depending on the plant, services include blending, mixing and compounding different cementitious materials, wet processing operations, on-site lab testing, micronizing stations, quality assurance and more, along with dedicated GMP blending stations, GM lab, and customizable clean rooms.

All in all, the company’s facilities and breadth of capabilities, along with its highly skilled team, have proven to be a winning formula for ongoing success.
